The vast majority of inquiries I receive are for romantic photoshoot at sunset. That is no surprise as light at sunset is warm and can help create a romantic atmosphere.
Yet, sunset can also the busiest moment during the day, particularly at locations with a scenic viewpoints. This is particularly true for Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence and all those other places in town where people gather and wait to see the sun go down beyond the hills overlooking west. So, unless one is ok with the idea of having strangers unintentionally photobombing their photos, then my recommendation as a professional photographer is to pick less busy locations or, even better, a different moment during the day, like sunrise.
Yes, sunrise! A word that can be scary for many travellers, yet it can hold a world of magic. Picture this. Empty places, the city still asleep that is awakening before your eyes, the sun that start making its way into the day. Doesn’t that sound magic? Please don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that I don’t like sunsets. I am very fond of them, bust most of the times the are much nicer to look at that than to be photographed because of the crowds one may have to face. Particularly for a private session, one may appreciate a quieter place to feel comfortable and enjoy the photoshoot to the fullest.
So this is why I always recommend my couples to meet at sunrise. Although I am not an early bird myself neither, believe me, it is always worth waking up early and have the city of Florence all for you. I have never regretted it once, nor have my customers. Once you make friends with the morning glow, it is tough to go back. Try for yourself and make a new friend. You will not be disappointed.
