Please, make me look good. I never like myself in photos! As a destination wedding and lifestyle photographer, this is one the most frequent requirement from my clients. No matter the age, gender, cultural background, most of us are sort of camera shy. And this is something I have to deal with on a daily basis.
My experience as a professional photographer is that it takes a little warming to feel comfortable in front of the camera. If you are not relaxed then you will look tense in the photographs and so the images will not be pleasant to your eyes. I personally believe that we are all photogenic in our own way. It all comes down to being ourselves and not trying and playing a role that doesn’t fit us. Let’s get rid of all the references we have in mind. Celebrities we may have seen on Instagram or glossy images of VIPs on glamour magazines.
In order to relax, it is essential to clear our minds and forget about photography. This is the main tip I always share with the subjects of my photographs. Easing the tension is key to winning their trust and let them enjoy the photoshoot. What also helps, is showing them you like what you are doing and that you enjoy their company. Being patient is definitely an important virtue for a photographer, who should never forget that images are a reflection of one’s own soul. As such, respect for others feelings and emotions is very important. And the best feedback I can ever get is something like “Alberto made the shoot fun and we felt comfortable like with a friend.”
